Winning the War on Worry
For some of us, the battle is constant. We want to be positive and at peace, but we regularly find our minds focused on something unpleasant. “Worst case scenario” seems to replay scenes of disaster on a continuous loop in our thinking. This way of thinking isn’t healthy and it isn’t enjoyable. Then we hear Jesus say to us, “Do not worry about your life…” (Matthew 6:25). But in a world where so many bad things can happen, how is it possible to conquer worry?
First, we need to distinguish between unhealthy worry and reasonable concern. We can’t deny the reality of problems, sorrow, and suffering. Christians should not turn their eyes away and pretend bad things don’t exist. God calls us to compassion, and that involves some hurting for the pain of others. Neither should we be oblivious to potential problems that can happen in the future. We need to be prepared for the negative things that can and sometimes do happen. But so much emotional energy is wasted worrying about things that never take place! Worry can cripple our lives and hinder us from the potential of joy and effectiveness that God wants us to have. Here are some ways to win your war on worry.
Do what you can with what is under your control. If there is something you can do to prevent or help improve a problems situation, think through it and take the initiative to do it. Much of our worry is about the consequences of our own inaction.
Remember how much is not under your control. When it comes down to it, not much is truly under our control. Factors that we can’t do anything about can totally change our situation. We may be tempted to worry about these things, but worrying about what we cannot change is useless.
Remember how important you are to the One who is in control of all things. Jesus reminds us to look at how God takes care of the birds and the flowers (Matthew 6:26-30). We are of much more value to God than these. So what sense does it make to worry?
Do your best and trust God for the rest. At the end of His discussion of the war on worry, Jesus said, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33). What can YOU do? Serve God first. What will HE do? Everything else you need. It may be a battle we must keep fighting, but keep on fighting. Don’t surrender to worry!
